The Voice in Your Head Is Not the Boss
GK·Jul 7, 2026·~1 minute read
Why does every anxious thought feel like an instruction?
There is a difference between having a thought and being run by one. Most of us never learn it, so every anxious thought gets treated like an instruction.
The mind produces thoughts the way weather produces clouds — constantly, and mostly without your permission. You don't have to arrest every one that passes.
A thought is a visitor. You don't have to give it the keys to the house.
What do calm people actually do differently?
The people who look calm under pressure aren't thinking fewer scary thoughts. They've just stopped promoting every thought to a decision.
That's the entire skill: noticing a thought arrive, and choosing — deliberately, sometimes slowly — whether it deserves a response at all.
Try this in the next 24 hours
Next time an anxious thought shows up, say silently: 'noted' — and keep doing what you were doing.
What decision have you been putting off because a thought convinced you it was a fact?
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you stop overthinking?
You don't stop the thoughts — you stop treating every one as a fact requiring action. Noticing a thought and immediately obeying it are two different skills; only the second one is optional.
Is this the same as positive thinking?
No. This isn't about replacing negative thoughts with positive ones — it's about not automatically believing or acting on either. The thought is a visitor either way.
What does 'noted' actually accomplish?
It creates a half-second of distance between the thought and your reaction — enough space to notice you have a choice, instead of being swept straight into it.
